shi bu gang dang — the stones that dare not石不敢當
it dares not, yet it bears. "stone, in its hardness, is able to bear all that is ill, yet it calls itself one who does not dare. "

“shi bu gan dang” began with the idea of shigandang, stones traditionally placed in particular locations as a form of protection. i changed this idea a little by making stones with round bodies and slightly hunched backs. they dare not, yet they still bear. i placed these stones in different everyday spaces, allowing them to appear in places where they did not originally belong. i photographed their positions and recorded them in a small notebook. through these actions, the stones began to exist somewhere between an object and a body. they were no longer simply sculptures to be looked at, but became like quiet figures standing in a space. for me, the stones became substitutes for the body. they allowed me to place my own feelings into an external object without making myself the subject directly. the stones could stand there for me, bear, wait, and respond to their surroundings. this made me think about why something without a life of its own can sometimes carry feelings that are so close to the human experience. as the work developed, i became interested not only in what the stone represented, but also in the stone itself. i began to explore its weight, surface, form, and relationship with space and other materials. the stone became less a symbol of emotion and more a starting point for observation, change, and experimentation.
