the floating stones

floating stones investigates how ceramic objects behave in a fragile, constructed environment.

each stone is slip-cast, and although they were not intentionally designed to be hollow, many unexpectedly float. this began a series of experiments in which i tested different forms, thicknesses, and casting methods to see how ceramic might drift, sink, or remain suspended. the results were unpredictable, and the stones’ buoyancy felt like a collaboration between material, water, and chance.

the stones rest inside a wooden basin lined with a transparent sheet. the water is mostly still; movement comes from subtle floor vibrations or the presence of people nearby. when the stones shift, they create quiet sounds, soft friction instead of impact. these sounds are almost imperceptible unless one comes close, which reflects my interest in small, intimate forms of perception.

on the transparent sheet, i wrote imagined conversations and small poems for the stones. the text sits beneath the water, slightly distorted, as if belonging to the stones’ internal voices. the work continues my exploration of “quietness,” shifting from visual stillness to sonic subtlety. the stones seem to breathe, murmur, or speak among themselves, not loudly but persistently.

through floating, sounding, and continuous experimentation, the stones reveal a gentle system, one that can only be experienced by those willing to slow down, listen, and pay attention.
